The World waits and whispers
behind closed doors and drawn curtains
and huddles secretly in darkened rooms
Cold cloaks the earth like a sodden blanket

the Festive Season
Hah! that's a good one
the coming of the Christ
Well he didn't come to the party
the last two thousand odd years
so why is He going to make it this time...?

The World waits and watches
Halts her breath in silent suspense
What calamity, atrocity, natural disaster
Will shatter this eerie peace
And rev up the sleeping engine of humanity...?

The facade of Hope
Like the Xmas lights
Grows tatty and second hand
Fifty years on it takes an effort
to smile and hope
When hope is a weary beggar
with mute stumps in supplication

Time of Peace
Time of Joy
Those times were extinguished
With the last late night closing
Of the big department store
Now the fizz and the pizzazz have all gone
Held in suspension until the opening of the
January Sales

Until then we watch and we wait
And try to placate the existential vacuum
That gnaws at our souls
And we take stock of our eternal inventory
But the shelves are all achingly bare
There is only silence, silence that stares
Into the endless emptiness that some call the soul
