Sometimes the canary, having been chased and preyed upon so much, tends to put every other creature on the suspect list and trusts noone.
Sometimes the canary dies, not directly from the cat's claws, but from the constant fear and loathing of the cat. Sometimes the canary never turns to other canarys for safety and suport.
But the cat knows there is a canary on every corner, so he shrugs his shoulders and moves along down the street. Knowing full well he scared that canary to death.
