Sweating from nightmares,
My daily night’s fare,
In the long shadow
Drawn out before dawn,
I toss my left arm
Across the place you warmed
And the glacial cold
Repeats that you’re gone.
Somewhere you’re reading,
Your diary, pleading,
Tearing out the pages
I’m printed upon,
Crushing memories
And lost reveries
With the ease a queen
Tramples a pawn.Time was I didn’t hear
Each tick of the clock, but
Now they all sound so long,
Can’t hear the sheets sigh
With each breath you take,
A lost midsummer night’s song.Stiletto sunlight,
Switchblade-sharp twilight,
Slices pink and hot
Through slits in the blinds,
Its razor’s embrace
Leaves scars on my face,
Neon slashes flashing
A “Vacancy” sign.
Floating motes of dust,
Sunbeam-shrouded rust,
Hover just above
The space you left behind,
I gently caress
The air’s emptiness,
But it’s the curve of
Your shoulder in my mind.Time was I didn’t hear
Each tick of the clock, but
Now they all sound so long,
Can’t hear the sheets sigh
With each breath you take,
A lost midsummer night’s song.
