Pulled Over in the Breakdown Lane

Pulled Over in the Breakdown Lane

Out in the Jersey swamps,
Where the lost boys romp,
And build reed effigies
Of the Empire State,
I went out for a drive
To see if I was alive,
Heard thickets of
Mutant crickets all mate.
Chemical romantics
Were getting all frantic,
Tugging hard and fast
At each other’s clothes,
Their three eyes gleamed
In rusty make-out machines
Set against the flames
That make refineries glow.

I cut the engine
And rolled to a stop,
Could hear
A train’s faint refrain,
Waiting for night
To howl at the full moon,
Pulled over
In the breakdown lane.

A troops of lost tourists
Hacking through the grass forests
Swore to me they’d had
To eat their perky guide,
I pointed toward Little Italy
Across the river in the city,
Thought a good dessert
Would help salve their pride.
The White Rabbit ran by
Trying to keep his watch dry,
Asked me if I could
Please give him a ride,
We pulled up to Wonderland
And it didn’t look so grand,
An old amusement pier
Leaning to one side.

I cut the engine
And rolled to a stop,
Could hear
A train’s faint refrain,
Waiting for night
To howl at the full moon,
Pulled over
In the breakdown lane.
