Hi Malthus,
This is a really interesting point in terms of relationships, and this poem, while appearing straightforward, actually taps into one of the central psychological dilemmas following a relationship's crash and burn. For years, I asked myself whether I had been unreasonable expecting Alyssa to ride out my mental hurricane or whether she had been unreasonable in giving up on me after two years of the depression, when we had previously been together for seven years and shared so much. Am I being prideful in having thought I didn't deserve such a fate, or am I trying to assert some sense of dignity in the face of the illness and the rejection? I could go around in circles on this for years (and unfortunately, for years I did, always eventually seeking to cut off this tortuous thought process with booze and pills). This poem has really stirred the old cerebellum pot. Atticus
