Hi Malthus,
You're definitely spot on about my need for talismans. I can't remember a single time in my life when I haven't mentally imbued something with special, magical significance and carried it around or clung to it. The dog's continued "presence" at my side, made possible by the rich scent of its well-groomed fur, acted as a reassuring link to a world beyond my reach. I became really good at hiding that bathrobe in the little room I shared with another patient, so the cleaning people wouldn't find it and take it away. I only returned it to the hamper on the day I was released. :) Atticus, who agrees with Mr. Peabody of the Bullwinkle show: "Every dog should have a boy."
