my sister's attempted suicide

Posted by Jai Narayan on June 22, 2004, at 8:16:42

My oldest sister was trained to succeed in everything she did

That windy night she stood in line at the grocery store
A packet of razor blades in her hand
She thought they all knew what she was thinking
But not a clerk picked up the phone to call about the impending emergency
She walked to the deserted park with voices swirling around her head
A chain clanged against the flagpole as the wind and rain increased

Miles away I was anxious that night and kept going to my front door
Peering out the window into the dark howling night
Tomorrow we would have a turkey and all the holiday warmth
Tonight there was a chill hanging in the room
I closed my eyes and saw blood everywhere
My anxiety was almost too much to contain

The call came with the first rays of the sun
She said she dragged herself to the nearest door
The man who answered worked as an EMT for the hospital

My sister survived that night to be born again to another life
This one on steady ground with meds that worked and lots of emotional support
