In reply to 'Cold turkey' Effexor (etc.) withdrawal..., posted by scrapper on March 7, 2006, at 12:59:54
hi Scrapper,
it sounds like you've come an amazing distance to get to this point. I can't even imagine how awful it must have been to suffer in that hospital with all those rotating doctors.from everything I've read, it's considered a very dangerous thing to go 'cold turkey' on so many meds at once, especially w/out any supervision.
Many people (doctors, experts, people here) recommend gradually cutting down on dosage. For example, if you take 20 mg/day of something, go to 15 mg/day for 2 weeks, then to 10 mg/day for 2 weeks, then to 5, then to zero. Or similar, but you get the idea. Even going slowly there will probably be some withdrawal symptoms.
Also, if you're taking several meds, it might be appropriate to wean off of them one at a time, instead of all at once.
Would it be possible for you to see a doctor about this very thing, and he/she could help you develop a detox plan? I'd love to help, but I'm not qualified to help build a plan for you.
While you're doing it, here are a few things I've read that can help:
Drink lots of water
Eat lots of whole foods: veggies, whole grains, lean meats
Avoid diet soda and diet products
Exercise regularly, even if you feel like c***
Talk to friends every day to let them know how you're doing, and to ask for help in case you need it
Avoid excess sugars and carbs
I wish you the best of luck with your detox. Please let us know what you decide!
