My question would be - what do you define as 'SEVERE'. I don't think you have to wait for severe side effects to realize that a certain medication is not for you. I object to the word 'trial' as well - we are people, not experiments. There is solid literature out there that helps a person make informed decisions about what they are putting into their body - it time that the doctors stop and think about what they are prescribing and to whom...without being influenced by the drug companies.
I have read extensively in medical journal articles - I would believe that one dose may be sufficient for SOME people to figure out that the medication is not for them. My understanding is that there are those who have difficulty in metabolizing certain medications - it has been recommended that genotyping be done prior to taking meds as it can tell you whether you are a poor metabolizer for a given drug or not...alot better than being a guinea pig (or dying for that matter). I would say that if a person is having brain zaps within a short time of initially taking effexor, then there is a problem which should NOT be ignored. These types of medications can be dangerous - please note I said 'can be' - for many people they work very well, and for a few the meds can be toxic! Prudence and doing your 'homework' is necessary when taking these meds - there are a number of people on this site that have a fair amount of knowledge, so continue reading!!! Make sure that your doctor knows what they are prescibing - make them look it up in the PDR (that's what it is for!) and discuss it with you. After all it's your body, and your life.
