I was on a low dose of xanax for a long time, and even that was hard for me to taper off of.
The consensus seems to be to take it really, really slowly. Take it down .25mg and stay at that dose for a couple of weeks. Continue tapering slowly - staying longer at each reduced dose. When I finally lept off the last .125mg (yes, you read right) it was 2 weeks of feeling so crummy that I didn't want to get out of bed.

Now that I've stopped I still have my anxiety, although it isn't as bad as before I started. Distracting myself during the bad times (I go and do something - anything - for 15 minutes, then reassess how I feel) helps a lot.
