I am not in the San Diego area, but I used to attend AA meetings fairly regularly(I am 6 years clean). The best way to meet people is to go to the meetings and then hang out afterwards, usually people stand around and talk. This is what is called the meeting after the meeting and sometimes it can be much more helpful than the meeting itself.
Just go up to someone whom you thought had a similar story to yours and introduce yourself. Once you start doing this you can xcge phone#'s(if you want!) and lots of time people go out to eat after the meeting, go along!! This is how it was for me, I am in the Seattle area. I have met some really neat people doing this, and have maintained some friendships over the years.
I think you are right, a very important part of my recovery was just being able to pick up the phone and talk to someone who knew, and understood, what the hell I was going through. It is very reassuring to know that someone gets you!
Take care,
Beth
