In reading Spanish I pick those things I am likely to want to finish. I have found "The Gospel according to Jesus Christ" a little difficult, but I had read a couple of his books in English, loved his irony, and the Portuguese is similar to the Spanish so I was not worried about losing anything in the translation.

So much depends in Spanish on the verb ending that English readers can be confused when several people are involved. For Spanish speakers English speakers read very quickly because there is all this non-information in our vowels that we skip. Learning to read Spanish means forgetting many of the rules for reading English.
