I am a pretty cynical person in general, but I have no beef with psychiatry.
Most of my psychiatrists have been very open and willing to take different routes with medications.
I understand that a lot of people are on medications "these days", but hey, what's the harm? People have always been on "drugs" whether it be alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, cocaine, pot etc. for thousands of years.
I don't blame psychiatry for the harm that they may have been induced in me, from taking psychiatric drugs. I understand that there is an unknown risk in any decision I make. I don't have to take medication. I have made the choice to.
I think the biggest 'aha' moment for me, was in accepting that psychiatry can only do so much to fix me. I expected psychiatry to fix everything that was wrong in my life. As a result, I would get angry at doctors for 'failing me'. I think society has lost perspective. We take our muffler to the muffler guy to get it fixed. We expect to take our brain to the brain guy to get it fixed.
Part of my problem with depression is that I become unable and / or unwilling to make the sorts of changes to my life that are necessary to recover. I want the solution to be easy.So no, I don't blame psychiatry. They never really made me any guarantees. Only in my mind they did.
