Fallada is not his real name. He used a nom de plume because of an interesting event in his youth.
A friend of his and the young Fallada had a duel in which Fallada survived. There is some evidence that it was a suicide pact. I imagine they were in love. That was around 1910.
I had never heard of him before my sister recommended him. The German people are nothing like the Russian people at the same time in "LIfe and Fate". I would describe the Germans as spiteful and the Russians as brutal, but there is a great heartedness (I think) in the Russians despite everything.
Everything is alright with me. I am down seeing our kids. I get such pleasure from them. Part of the pleasure comes from what follows when you allow them to be themselves. I had never wanted to have kids. The usual thing...life is a mistake, consciousness worse, who would want to bring children into this world and so on....and my kids have given me delight after delight. I don't know if this speaks in favour of pessimism?
