I'm guessing you've seen these but I'm posting the links just in case. I found information in there that I didn't know.

http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/11000.html about SSI.I don't know whether or not you really need a lawyer to start the process. I have heard that most people wind up needing one later on. However, if your parents are considering transferring any assets to you they definitely should talk to one first.
