It was odd. His English was unaccented (perfect English), and this was the disorienting thing which made me feel he was asking me why I was talking to these zombies. Later my wife said she felt the same. So, when I figured he must have been directing the question at the Japanese speaker, I didn't take it personally at all, because I thought he was making a point about the politics of the West and I felt I was in agreement with him. But I never got a chance to work all that through.
