This is the worst economy since The Great Depression.

The unemployment rate for people who are still receiving benefits looking for a job is about 9.5%. The unemployment rate for all people, including those who have given up looking and their benefits were exhausted is about 17%. The unemployment rate for blacks is about 25%.

The above numbers do not include college graduates looking for first time jobs. The real unemployment rate, all things considered, means that 1 in 3 people aggressively looking for a job will not find one. The jobs that are found typically pay far less than previous jobs, and require doing much more work. A popular retailer, as an example, now has one department manager running two or three departments instead of one. Lots of consolidation in all businesses. Lots of streamlining, multiple duties etc.

All of the above do not apply to government jobs. They continue to experience very low or nonexistent unemployment. In other words, for those who work in the private sector paying taxes to pay those who work in government, life is hard. For those in government who collect paychecks from those having a hard time, they are relatively unaffected.

If you can read between the lines, no more be said.

In any case, yes, it is very tough times. I know a computer expert who used to make $100,000 a year who is now working in WalMart for $9 an hour and he is very thankful for his job. In this environment, any job is a good job.
