P, I'm a teacher nearing retirement age and though I will still have my own studies and writing once I retire from the classroom, I'm not sure how I'll feel. Some of my colleagues can't wait to quit teaching "so they can do their own work" and then they just vegetate; others go happily off to the library and continue their research. Other chuck the whole thing and go fishing. Even during the worst of my anxiety / depression I could go into the classroom and perform. Not always at my best & sometimes in a state of near-total dissociation, but it gave me a kind of center. And when I'm well, there is nothing better or more satisfying. Again, not sure how I'll feel when I hit retirement age in a few years.
