Change the linen on any used beds and buy yourself a bouquet of flowers for the kitchen table, then declare yourself done with preparations... They need your attention not your "stuff"... Also butt-in on any conversations containing complaining!!! I dare ya' to stand your ground and do these things for yourself... They may not be good at their own self-respect but by g*d they'll best have respect for you while in your house...
