You and me both.

Here are some things I've thought of for myself, some may help you, too -- or at least trigger some thoughts that may lead to better things:

1. I used to attend the weekly informal stitch'n'bitch sessions at my local yarn store. It's closed down now, but I'm going to try another. That led to a couple of closer acquaintances, including the shop owner inviting me to join her and some of her other friends for dinner out most every week. That's been nice -- not perfect, obviously, but it's nice to feel included.

2. MeetUp has some local events that revolve around some of my interests. I keep wanting to go to some of the MeetUp events around here, but haven't yet.

3. Yahoo Groups has some groups that are local to me and again revolve around things that interest me. Again, I haven't gone yet, but want to and plan to.

4. We have a local knitting guild, which is really just a bunch of local knitters who meet once a month. I have no clue what they do, but since I know a bunch of them from the other yarn shop, I figure at least I'll have some contact with other people if I go.

5. I'm on the board of our HOA, so in theory I could meet some neighbors that way.

5.a. Our complex has a big club house by our pool, and I've been trying to get it together to arrange an arts and crafts meet up there. I use the space for things like cutting out fabric when I'm sewing, or doing other things that require space or the absence of kittens, and sometimes other people come in who express interest. I haven't gotten that together, either, but it seemed like a way to meet people who live nearby and have similar interests.

6. I've thought about taking a class in something non-academic -- dance classes, pottery, automotive, just something that interests me and might lead to meeting other people.

7. Local dog parks are great ways to meet people, but I don't think I can put the kittens on leashes and convince anyone that they belong...

Those are some ideas I've had. Maybe we could all contribute some ideas, and have a thread that includes results if we try any of them? Maybe even a thread that we use to encourage each other?

C'mon! Let's all get out there and meet one new person this week!
