> and i wound up walking down the side of the highway yesterday. it was 107 degrees outside and due to my silly medication, what was supposed to be a nice family walk turned into me about passing out (i don't sweat anymore. it's nice to not sweat, don't get me wrong, but i get all red in the face when it's hot outside and man do i get mean!!!!)
The loss of the ability to sweat is called oligohydrosis, and is potentially fatal. Your risk serious and possibly permanent damage to your brain, heart, and other organs. Getting all red in the face is a sign of impending heat stroke, caused by an increase in core body temperature. If that happens, you must cool yourself, as quickly as you can. Immersion in cool water is the most effective means.
This is an under-reported side effect of topiramate and zonisamide, especially, but other meds too.
If it's more than body temp outside, you shouldn't go out, if you have oligohydrosis. This isn't a situation to "tough it out", or be stubborn. It's life threatening.
Best,
