While I have no definitve explanation as to how the pieces of fabric could suddenly come together into a completed garmet, I will comment that, in my experience, fabric has a very lively personal life and will behave in all sorts of ways as long as it suits its agenda.

Now, regarding the buttons. I think it is quite likely that your button stash as reached some sort of critical collective mass that, sort of akin to a black hole, makes it impossible to extract a single button from the collective. You can ADD buttons to the collective, but that only makes the collective stronger and less likely to give up a single button for a garmet.

I've certainly experinced this with clothing. The more clothes I put in my closet, the less likely I am to have a single thing to wear.

It is an interesting phenomenon.
