hi Kath & everyone, i think another trick was to brush and comb her hair really well so that my friend's scalp eventually had less build-up on it while she was washing it without shampoo. the theory is that your scalp (the ph, etc.) becomes dependent on the shampoo in the same way that your armpits become dependent on deodorant. after a while, the buildup will go away. i will say that i lived with this friend, and her hair didn't smell to my knowledge! but it was during a very cold winter, so i'm sure that helped.
i use crystal deodorant too, and love it. and i sweat a lot, so i sometimes reapply later in the day. i find it helps with stinky clothes, too, if i can't change my shirt i give the armpits a few swipes with the crystal. my last crystal lasted 6 years!
over the years i've worked to replace a lot of body care products with nutrition. flax oil instead of lotion, for example. although this recent winter made me break down and start using lotion again...maybe this summer i'll experiment with my hair if i'm brave enough!
take care,
philyra
