My own dog (a border collie) bit our postman when he was tied up outside the post office a while ago. He seemed to develop a penchant for this particular postie's flesh for reasons known unto himself. Never had a problem like that with him before or with anyone else. You probably did nothing to provoke it, the dog most likely imagined you were about to attack his/her mistresses as you walked past them and acted in perceived defence. Sorry to hear you got hurt. Did the girls apologise or anything?
I got bitten myself (by another border collie) while delivering leaflets for the local council, but I didn't end up developing a phobia of dogs. If you have a dog yourself or know someone who does and you feel comfortable around it, I would suggest you try and spend a bit of time with it to desensitise yourself and add a bit of reassurance that not all dogs bite and this was just a one-off.
