If you had said "clanking" noises, I would have said that maybe your heat hasn't been on, and the radiators are reacting to the first infusion of steam.
I'm not sure what the explanation is-- but it happens almost every year when the radiatiors come on the first time. Maybe you need to open the valves all the way-- so the radiator is completely on.
Usually doesn't happen any other time.
