Thank you very much, 10der, that was really interesting. I am just starting to learn about the ways that Jewish liturgical music impact the history of western music ("classical" music) and so the link for the KolNidre was wonderful.
I wonder if this holiday has anything to do with the more pensive respectful and considerate behavior I have been enjoying from my Jewish friends and colleages for a few weeks now? Alternatively, maybe I'm just more receptive, or more likely to elicit such behavior from others.
The meaning of "atonement" is one that is surely universal to humankind. So, I will take some time in the next few days and think about atonement. My timing might be a little off by the Jewish calendar, but I think there is always a time and a place to consider what laws or promises we have broken, and which relationships we have disregarded. Recognizing these human flaws is the first step towards repairing myself and my relationship with others and society in general.
Thanks again,
-Li
