Yeah, he was a hoot.

I thought he was a dumbas* and he often displayed poor judgement and overconfidence.

Yet, his enthusiasm WAS infectious, and spontaneous and sincere. In the middle of filming something about snakes, he might spot an ant running across a leaf and devote 5 minutes just to give us a narrative about why this ant is so cool and worthy of our notice and his excitement.

And his death was very freakish. It's easy to write the "moral" to this story. It's easy to be cynical about why this guy makes the headlines when other's deaths don't. But. Why not remember that he was a person above all, and deserves our rememberance and respect at this time above all other times.
