You know you're idealizing him right? (not that he's not way cool I'm sure ;-)
People always seem to "go towards the light" - (see reference to Poltergeist movie here ;-)
there's like a hope in that for finding that which they seek- some need fulfilled, something to identify with, attach to, etc.
