I tend to do this, particularly under stress.

I think it's my brain's way of distracting itself. Resourceful thing, my brain. But it sure gets in the way of productivity.

There are nonmedication OCD treatments that you might find useful whether or not you have OCD. You might want to look into "Brain Lock" or "Stop Obsessing". The latter is my favorite. Although I think I need a refresher course.
