Yes, Larry,
We do forget that not everyone celebrates Memorial Day with us, and not everyone has Thanksgiving in November, or even at all. We forget that "Merry Christmas" is not a universal greeting in late December. It's especially difficult for us (Americans) to realize that Canadians don't share the same cultural and national traditions, because we share the same language, the same idioms, (the same psycho-babble boards) and often the same history. Personally, I try to celebrate everything. Chinese New Year's, Boxer Day, the opening of the Olympic Ceremonies, Christmas, German Reunification Day, Labor Day, Spring Break, . I'm a sucker for a good holiday. For us in the USA, Memorial Day is a patriotic holiday where we honor our service women and men. The spirit of the holiday, however, is that it is the official start to the summer season. The beaches open, we can wear white shoes again, the grills get dusted off, and Monday is the day when families get together for the big cook-out. It's a nice holiday. I hope you can share its spirit, if not its specifics :)
