Here is a good article on the BBC website about it
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4673576.stm
It won't be affecting phone lines.. Phone companies will have more than adequate security to make sure that their services stay up and running.
the best advice is to scan your PC today. Update your virus software, or use an online scanner.. AVG Free is very good virus protection if you don't currently have one (you shouldn't use th einternet if you don't though).
You can get AVG free here -
You can do a free virus scan here -

The only way to get this virus is to open an unsafe attachment from an email. You should NEVER open an attachment if you don't know exactly what it is. The vast majority of attachments carrying this virus are offering free porn!
As is usual for virus', th epanic they cause is alot more dangerous than the actual virus!
Hope this helps puts your mind at rest. Its always a good idea to back things up. You can get USb hard drives pretty cheap now a days which are fantastic for backing up quickly and easily!
never fear.. its all being blown out of all proportion.
