(somehow that seems oxymoronic, but never mind- am very serious.) because a stage is a controlled situation where it is reasonable to attempt this, the audience is kept in the dark so as to facilitate one's own signal and reduce audience's noise- now if we are talking about as a psychotherapeutic principle well i would say individuals are too idiosyncratic and signal to noise ratio too low (in most cases- there are exceptions).
