Can an enviorment cause mental instablity

What is mental insability in definition?
Staying at home, feeling that im trapped, plus pressure of collage, getting a new job, mother will not take me the doctor becuase im on her insurance. I feel really unstable, at times.
Fluctuating feelings, unstable thoughts.
