I think it was something about their high-pitched whiny voices that did something unpleasant to the back of my spine.
Or their relentless cheeriness, their inability to "see it coming," or the vaguely discomforting fact that Smurfette was the ONLY girl (even as a youngster I knew there was something "off" about that!)
I also hated the fact that Gargamel was so STUPID a villain and -- like Wile E. Coyote, never actually GOT the roadrunner. I often dreamed that he would catch and eat a Smurf. I secretly cheered for him on the few occasions I actually watched a whole cartoon. If I cheered out loud, my sister would cry and complain to my mom...
I guess I was never able (even as a kid) lose myself in the "willing suspension of disbelief" that is required for successful cartoon enjoyment. They just never gave the opposition a fair chance!
But that's just me...
and I know many people who LOVED the Smurfs!JenStar
