It was well worth the drive. Mountain views have always nourished my soul.
I never think that I underestimate my son, but my goodness!!!
He's always been one of those children that doesn't whine on tedious car trips. But on family trips he generally makes a cocoon in the back seat with books and sundry electronic diversions.
But apparently he felt that a two person trip required more effort on his part.
So he made engaging conversation. He proposed activities that both of us could enjoy (audio books). When we reached our destination, he showed proper enthusiasm for the entertainment offered (panoramic vistas and wildflowers and curving mountain roads). When offered anything that would require additional cost, he politely demurred for just the right period of time to allow his host (me) to back out of the offer before graciously and appreciatively accepting. On the way home, he did retreat to his cocoon, but not before solicitously determining that I really could entertain myself.
Unless he was a very proper gentleman in a previous life, I suppose I have a lot to thank his school for. I know he never learned such things from his graceless mother, and probably not from his dad either.
I was so proud of him.
