Super-Critical Science Question about Fingers!

OK, so I'm in Chicago for a business conference, and I'm kind of lonely and don't know what to do. So, since I'm holed up in a swanky hotel, I decided to take a super-long, super-hot shower in the posh spa-like shower.
I was in there so long, my fingertips wrinkled all up! I remember this from when I was a kid, but
WHAT CAUSES IT????????
I won't be able to sleep tonight until someone tells me. :-)
