>this is an understatement: notice that the british get all the credit in the Wikepedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnderstatementThe first part of the meaning is about the Rocky Mountains ~ which are in America and Canada, how can Britain take the credit for them? lol
Wikipedia was created by 2 Americans ~ but the actual article you have got from wikipedia for the word understatement is a 'stub'
Wikipedia:Stub
Stubs are articles which have not yet received substantial attention from the Wikipedia editors. They have been created, but don't yet contain enough information to be truthfully considered articles. The community believes that stubs are far from worthless. They are, rather, the first step articles take on their course to becoming complete.
The objective of this article is to provide a general guide for dealing with stubs. It is recommended that all users read the Essential information section, which consists of the first half of the article. Additional information contains data which might be of interest only to advanced users, and thus is optional.

Perhaps the guy who wrote it lived in the Rocky Mountains and had just recently watched Monty Python's The Meaning of Life..
Kind regards
