I agree w/ PC too. And it's not just medicine--it is all of science. How many great discoveries/inventions turned out to be harmful years later? Asbestos (sp?), cigarettes, lead paint...
Tom clearly has never experienced a depressive (or psychotic, or whatever) episode himself. I don't think that he would be so bold if he truly understood the hell that we experience.
As for bad diagnosis, it is a problem in mental health. But part of the reason is that people have inadequate access to mental health care. So they aren't treated until they have been deteriorating for years or they are treated by a GP who doesn't really know enough about psychiatry to treat them (not all GPs, mind you, but many of them).
The system isn't perfect, but there are still many good apples. My current pdoc and former pdoc are two genuinely compassionate women. They have worked very hard to make me feel better. As long as there are pdocs like them, I know all hope isn't lost on psychiatry.
And Dr. Bob seems like a pretty good guy too. ;)
