In an earlier post I mentioned geocaching and someone asked me what it was. I forgot to answer then, so I'll answer it now. I'm sorry that I forgot who it was that asked.
Geocaching is a fairly new sport in which people hide a container containing one or more items. The items can be as simple as a log book and pencil, or they can be anything that the imagination can come up with. I have found a buton, some wool, and a lego man. There is currently a contest where the winner wins a brand new Jeep.
The object is to find these 'caches' One first goes to a website, http://www.geocaching.com and finds a nearby cache. The coordinates of the cache are on the website, along with possible clues to help find the cache. You take the coordinates and plug them into a GPS receicver. The receiver will help you get close to the location of the cache. Then you need to rely on skill, and possibly the clues to help you find the cache.
Once you've found the cache you can sign the log book, possibly trade for an item in the cache, and then replace the cache, hiding it as well as you found it. You don't want to hide it anywhere else because then the clue wouldn't help, and the people who maintain the cache might not be able to find it. Then you can go back to the web site and log your visit.I hope this sort of explains it.... it is really alot of fun. Good luck.
