Watch out for excessive "grinding sounds" when you boot it up. This seems to be a sign to me that there is something going on down there that shouldn't be.
For the Love of God, BACKUP everything you don't want to lose.
E-mail addresses are hard for me, I don't know how to back them up.
But back up data, ALL data, even jpeg files, etc. Be sure you know where your software is, in case you have to reload it.
When I lost my last computer at work, I hadn't backed up my picture files in a while (I do amature marketing) Anyway, I lost some ad slicks that I had done as well as loads of pictures I had taken of our product and they were my only copy. BAD BAD BAD move not to back up.
I also lost some forms I had created. I am the Form Queen at work and I had created tons of spreadsheets, forms, etc. And since it had been a few months since I have backed them up, I lost many of those as well.
I know better, and I always back up my data (had to recreate a whole quarter of data once, not fun), but never dreamed of constantly backing up my other files.......But you should.Just remember,
BACKUP CONSTANTLY
DEFRAG OFTEN
REBOOT PROPERLYAND
Always use a virus protection program. A spam blocker is also good, and any kind of firewall with the internet is a must. However, this will not help you if your hard drive is going bad. That I don't think you can prevent. SOmetimes they can be cleaned and re formatted and work okay, but my experience has been that once they begin to have problems, they continue to have problems.
I'm no expert by any means, what I know, I know from experience.
Anyway, yes a good cleaning would help, internally and externally.
