spybot and ad-aware are among the best out there.
i also suggest buying the norton suite that includes a firewall (mcaffee is also good) and setting the security REALLY high. that way you should be able to see EVERYTIME a program tries to access the internet.
from the way you describe it, i wonder if you have a virus or a trojan or a malicious keylogger (although those usually like to remain hidden from view). have you scanned for viruses? there are some websites that will do a webscan for free. Mcaffee and TrendMicro I believe will both do it.
BTW, if you get a firewall running on your computer, it will protect you if anyone knows your IP address. Might be a good approach if you're worried about that. And make sure the computer santa brings has firewall and antivirus software installed, too! (And adaware and spybot!)
lotsa nasties out there. they suck to get rid of.
worst case solution, though? Completely reformat your harddrive, wipe it clean and reinstall with the disks that probably came with your machine. install firewall and virus software before you even connect it to the internet again.
it's a sucky last resort, but it's guaranteed to work.
