Hi crushed,
I'm 39. Which isn't too old at all, if you ask the doctors and everyone. But we had a terrible time trying to get pregnant. Well . . . I mean . . . it was *fun* and all . . . but it didn't work for a long time. I think some people have no trouble getting pregnant into their 40s, but for some people it gets harder earlier.
And then there's assisted reproduction. It is getting better all the time, but it's really expensive still. We had decided we wouldn't do in vitro, just because we couldn't afford it. At that point, we were going to adopt (which costs about the same, but you have a 100% chance of having a baby, instead of 20% or so). We were just waiting for my 40th birthday before we completely gave up. I guess we are squeaking in under the wire there.
Did you hear about that woman in her late 50s who recently became pregnant even though her tubes had been tied 30 years earlier? Hard to imagine how a person would feel about that one . . .
