Hi Alexandra,

There are exceptions (different systems), but in general in the US a grade of "A" is a 4, "B" is a 3, "C" is a 2, "D" is a 1, and "F" is a zero.

So if a student takes six classes in a semester and receives for those classes 3 A's, 2 B's and a C (all other things being equal), the GPA for that semester is 3.33 (that is, 4+4+4+3+3+2=20 divided by 6 = 3.333).

A "perfect" Grade Point Average in this system is 4.0 (i.e., "straight A's").

I hope this helps!

Mark H.
