In reply to help! i'm obsessing and its driving me crazy!, posted by asoiferman on June 8, 2004, at 13:32:00
Hi asoiferman,
I've had obsessions also in the past, although I am not OCD. So I think mine aren't as debilitating as they can get, although they have certainly been very hard to handle and full of intense anxiety that changed my life. But I did stumble across a few things that helped, at least a little bit. Here is a good web site with some ideas that I've used successfully:
http://www.anxietyandstress.com/sys-tmpl/dealingwithocd/
Scroll down to the section on Examples of Self Conducted Exposure. The ones that helped me were "scheduled obsession" and "change the status quo of an obsession".
For me meds were extremely helpful, as was cognitive therapy. But the tricks on this site would ease the pressure sometimes when meds weren't enough or things were getting unbearable.
I know what you mean about the obsessions affecting your husband. My husband is very supportive and patient, but he would get a little exasperated when I wouldn't drive under powerlines (which really limits your mobility), or leave the windows open in summer, or some other weird obsession-driven behavior.
Good luck, and let me know how it goes.
