Heheheh, not that you're gonna wanna hear this, but you're gonna have to take it to a good, trusted mechanic to have it checked out. Mazdas, overall, are good, solid workhorse style cars. They break down, same as any other car. The quality of care they've received counts a lot, so bonus points to anyone who hands you a file containing maintenance records. Even with that, though, get a prepurchase exam from a good mechanic.
I haven't owned a Mazda myself, but my best friend had an old GLC -- precursor to the 323 -- for years, and loved it.
