GG,
You can learn so much from each client. May sound heretical, but think about it. I find that the heterogenaeity of clienthood gives me snapshops I can turn into insights so many times.
My latest that I am grappling with is that if punishment is how to alter a childs awareness, implying the same or worse for the next transgression, society must decide to call adult punishment another term such as retibution or fiscal balancing. Punishment of a true adult will be ignored since there are so many shades of gray present.
Shades of gray begs the question, punishment for what exactly? Also, I don't like what is going on with our money whereby warehoused criminals perfect their crime techniques in prison and come out raising even more havoc than before. What are we getting for our $40,000 per year to warehouse these jokers, the highest cost in the world, producing the highest crime rates in the world.
Believe me I am not thinking about this naively. I have worked daily with folks who were on residency program leave from their jailtime. Most are children in grown-up bodies. So who am I talking about?
Any true adult the government administers punishment to, exacting retribution instead of fixing the problem. The word rehabilitation implys misuse of taxpayer money (that should be spent by government contractors on buying $600 hammers and $4,000 toilet seats). So I hesitate to use the word.
Crime and ???? (instead of punishment).
Hope all is well.
