I don't know how you kept from going in the water after him! Just the thought of him being so scared and running out of energy......I'm so glad that you have him home safe....the fence is probably the best way to go....game wardens, in my area, are pretty hard-nosed about deer herds...and I can tell you from my experience that one of my dogs always acted totally innocent in front of me and then she and another dog attacked a sheep one day.....I've never believed since then that they won't attack something or chase it if the opportunity comes along and momma ain't looking!!!!
