Guilt and a Lama (the one L kind)

Once upon a time I was at retreat with an American Buddhist lama - Surya Das. He was talking about guilt, and he used his mother as an example. He said that his mom was in the hospital for tests that week, the tests were apparently not critical. But, she was trying to lay a guilt trip on him for not being there.
He said we should try to think of guilt as a gift offered which we can chose not to accept!
