Yesterday a tiny Ruffed Grouse crossed the road in front of our car. We stopped and watched it. He pulled up next to my side of the car. I started to talk to him and he paced back and forth. My partner was frantically trying to get his camera to work. The bird began to vocalize, a throaty coo and trill. I began to coo back. We were there with the bird for about 5 minutes. Then I got out of the car. He backed away, fanned out his tail a little and then started to vocalize again. I walked away from him and he ran after me. I stopped and he would almost stumble over his feet to stop right next to me. I walked....he ran....I stopped he stopped. I finally bent down and he got real close and started to peck the ground and strut. I was very attracted to this little wild thing. This went on for a while till I had to get him off the road....other cars where coming. He went into the bush but when we drove off he came back out on the road and was running after our car for about 50feet. We lost him on a curve in the road. Wild!
