This makes a lot of sense. I am lucky my parents chose an old fashioned name for me. They intentionally chose names that don't lend themselves to nicknames, other than adding "ie" to the name, which no one ever does. (I kind of wish someone would :)
There was always one other girl in class, wherever I went to school, even here, with the same name, but it's not very popular, so I didn't have the same experinece you had.
